My name is Brenda. I started smoking when I was about 14. Like most teenagers, I had no idea how addictive they were. I quit later for 25 years. Went through a terrible separation, depression started social drinking and started smoking again. Now 56 in 2018 and I’m trying to quit again. I quit for 2 weeks starting Jan 2, 2018 with only my will power and determination. Started again. I’m down to about 6 cigarettes a day.
I’m so sick and tired of this addiction yet when the urge comes, it drives me mad and I give in.
The urges are mostly when I am bored, stressed, drinking, with other smokers, break time, after eating, or on the computer. I am able to get through quite a few of the urges, but I eventually give in again.
Once I light a cigarette, my first two or three inhales are so enjoyable but after that, I have to admit, the cigarette isn’t pleasant. What a discussing product. Other than my nicotine addiction, I’m inhaling tons and tons of chemicals, making my chances of lung cancer higher (Mother and Brother died of lung cancer). I smell like an astray. I cough sometimes during the day. I am not as motivated as I was when I quit for 25 years and also when I recently quit.
I was going to the gym and walking the treadmill every other day. I was faithful for 2 weeks until I suddenly got a sharp pain on the right side of my abdomen. Went to emergency to find out it wasn’t serious, probably muscle related. That took me out of my routine for 5 days and once again, smoking became easier and I still haven’t gone back to the treadmill since. It is now Jan 15, 2018 and I plan on getting back on the treadmill today. It is like a spiralling downward cycle. Like the devil is on my shoulders constantly saying, “Screw it, have a cigarette, it’s your life or Screw the treadmill, have a nap instead”
My daughter gave me a book from her boyfriend called Easy Way to Quit Smoking. I’m not a reader especially with How To books. I wish I was. Another thing I’ll be working on. So I figured I’d give it a shot while at my call centre job in between calls.
I am about a 1/4 of the way through the book and I can’t explain why it is slowly changing my direction with my smoking desire, but it is. This author was an extreme smoker for 30 years and became smoke free without pain, irritation or stress. He has written this book to help others. He encourages you if you are still smoking not to quit until you have completely finished his book. He has helped thousands of people. I have tried, cold turkey, nicotine patches, nicotine puffer but I always go back when stressed or if I have even a couple of drinks or bored and other excuses.
I hope and pray this is the last struggle I have for the remainder of my life. I have an amazing relationship with all my kids and they are so supportive. I have no grand children yet and want to be smoke free when they do arrive. None of my kids smoke because my x and I didn’t smoke when they were very young for 25 years. I’m sure that really helped them to not start.

Like I said, I am only a 1/4 of the way through this book and already he has somehow helped me to the point that after 3 puffs, I’m disgusted with the cigarette. I’m feeling very confident I have found my way out forever, my freedom, my life back without the extremely addictive tobacco chemical based cigarettes. This book here he wrote in 2004. This is the one I’m reading. Since then I noticed he wrote a newer version in Jan 2015. I have not read that one yet. You decide.
Nicotine Won’t Let You Quit Smoking
Does nicotine have a strong hold over you? It’s one of the most addictive substances on the planet – found naturally in tobacco. Although not illegal, it’s equally as addictive as cocaine or heroine, two illegal drugs known for their strong addictive qualities.
When you use nicotine, your body begins to rely on it both mentally and physically. You can’t quit smoking because you have to face both the psychological and physical issues facing you at this point, which is often overwhelming for anyone.
It’s not the smoke itself that wreaks havoc on your addictions and makes it nearly impossible for you to quit smoking – it’s the nicotine that gets carried in the smoke deep into your lungs where it plants itself in your bloodstream and then moves to every available part of your body to affect your internal health.
Your heart and blood vessels, your brain, your hormones, and your metabolism are all directly affected by nicotine. Even though you may logically know the damage being done, your ability to quit smoking is diminished because the drug has the same effect as endorphins, releasing mood-elevating feelings that cause you to crave more.
But nicotine has another result. Eventually, the symptoms disappear and the strong hold nicotine has over the user loosens up its grip and allows the ex-smoker to break the habit for good. Most smokers have to try several times before they’re able to quit smoking forever, although many do it on the first try using smoking cessation aids.
Quit Smoking by Facing Your Psychological Addiction
When you’ve been addicted to nicotine, the thought of trying to quit smoking can be intimidating. Aside from the physical withdrawal symptoms, there’s a psychological addiction to the habit-forming drug.
If you’re setting out on a mission to quit smoking, make sure you implement a plan to attack your mental habit as well as face the withdrawal of nicotine physically from your body. Medications and counseling can contribute to an easier time when you quit smoking, because it’s an emotional and social habit as well as just a habit of motion, taking your fingers to and from your mouth to inhale a cigarette.
