Their performance is based on a number of concepts and they use any number of combinations to achieve what they desire. It is the lock on a large safe. Visualization is not just seeing an image in your head which prompts or motivates you. It is the combination of bringing up images, smells and colors that match those images for instance. Champion boxer Mike Lee has stated that before he steps into the ring for a fight, he has already fought that person 200 to 300 times and the outcome is always the same, with him having his hand raised. Mike states that when visualizing the boxing ring, he can smell things associated with it, like the leather gloves, sweat and if one assumes that smells are important, perhaps what the people at ringside are eating and drinking, are part of his visualization. He hears the crowds, the referee, his opponent and other associated sounds. The belief he holds, is that the brain can be tricked by doing this and that by repeating his visualization as many times as he does, his brain believes his victory has already taken place.

Habits can make or break us. Any habit you have, good or bad, is built up from repeating the same process over and over. Habits can form physically in the brain. Much research has been done by neuroscientists, on how the brain forms habits. They found that all habits, good or bad are formed in a portion of our brain, called the basil ganglia. The forming of a habit, is a 3 part series of events. First, something occurs that causes your brain to go into automatic mode and then a behavior good or bad starts up. The second part is indulging in the actual behavior for a period of time. Lastly, is the reward aspect. The brain finds something it likes and approves of, about the habit, even if it is a bad habit.

Repeating the habit, makes a physical connection in the brain between neurons and the habit continues without conscious knowledge of it. That is why bad habits are so hard to break. Champions take advantage of this by hard wiring good habits into their brains by constantly repeating a positive action. That may be getting up at 5:00 a.m. no matter how they feel. Once the clock chimes, they are up and perhaps running for an hour on a cold rainy day. Developing championship habits and combining visualization is very powerful.

Forming positive habits creates champions in all walks of life. You can be a champion earner, creating a lifestyle that makes a deep and loving connection with your family. An Olympic champion like Michael Phelps, has created habits that have served him, even in very unusual ways. Michael was involved in another one of his fantastic pool events. After entering the water at a high speed, he realized his goggles had come loose and water had seeped inside. This made seeing in the pool almost impossible. Michael Phelps uses visualization and habits to become the most successful swimmer ever. Many people would have lost total focus in that moment. Yet Michael remained calm and thought about how to continue and win. He instantly realized that his habit of counting strokes, was now his key to success. After many years of counting exactly how many strokes from one end to the other end of an Olympic size swimming pool, all he needed to do was put his focus on his count. Although he could not see properly, Michael went into deep focus, counting his strokes and won his event.

Habits and getting “into the zone” go hand in hand. Pro performers understand building great habits. They also know that when a coach or fellow athlete gives them criticism, it means that they already have strengths and that they need to correct the flaws. By correctly the flaws and turning them into strengths, they can achieve powerful dreams. Some habits of professional athletes could be termed anchors. You see a pro baseball player, tapping their baseball ball over and over in a set way-which means they are “getting in the zone and powering up for action.” Basketball players may dribble the ball in one type of movement only, to achieve the same feeling and visualize what they want to occur.

Musical performers like Mick Jagger, continue to astound audiences with excessive energy and movements that most people in their seventies would not be able to do. Mick has set routines of exercise for his body and for his vocal chords. Before heading off to a concert, one thing Mick will do in effort to not only stretch his vocal chords but get in the zone, is to do sets of intense vocalizations. These vocalizations pump him up mentally to go out each and every night to put on an amazing show.

Meditation is used by champions to help visualize the possibilities of going beyond their previous performance. A champion or peak performer will use mindful meditation every day to help them become pro-active and maintain a positive attitude even when things do not go 100% according to plan. Many champion athletes report that by doing mindful meditation, they found that their brains began to operate at a higher level every day. The mindful meditation not only improved their visualization and realization of goals but improved their overall daily living.

The high performance athlete will use mediation techniques before performance and then do another session after they have given their all.

Mindful meditation can be used to lower pain by scanning your body with your brain and locating exactly where it is. While meditating on that painful spot, you ask yourself questions about the pain, to discover why it is there and exactly where it radiates to. Using your meditation and visualization, you can see the pain as an object and you can work on dissolving that object or breaking it into smaller pieces that can flow out of your body. Visualize the pain as an extreme color and then see it lighten to softer pink or white. We all have pain of some type. Using visualization can lessen the pain and then your focus can be applied to what you have outlined on your vision board. Without your mind constantly reminding you of pain, you are free and clear to work on what you desire.

A champion athlete will always face injuries that will be painful and make peak performance harder. They meditate and visualize to re-label what that pain means and thereby soften its influence on their bodies. A very good example of this, is athletes who have lost limbs but still run or climb with prosthetic limbs. Without the use of meditation and visualization, it would be very difficult for them to run a long distance race in extreme pain caused by the prosthetic against the stub of the amputation.

Imagine being able to control your body heat and mind, in order to swim for long distances under the ice, from one hole to another. This is what Wim Hof does and he has astounded not only the world but the medical community. Wim uses a form of meditation similar to Tummo “Inner Fire” meditation as performed by Tibetan monks. With this meditation and his powerful deep breathing exercises, that stores extra oxygen in his body, Wim has recorded amazing feats. He got into a frozen lake hole and then swam from that hole to another bored hole, a distance of 216 feet. One other amazing feat was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts. To be clear, Mount Kilimanjaro is not as tall as Mount Everest, however it is 19,341 feet in height and has Artic like snow conditions. 

Clearly our minds can do amazing things if we allow ourselves to believe and to take action. When doing meditation it is very important to be comfortable.  Instant relaxation is a trick that many high performers use. They work extremely hard, using all the physical and mental abilities that they have. When they recognize a certain level of over exerting and a drop off in performance, they take a very short break. They have learned to take that short time and go into instant relaxation. It may be the ability to mentally transport themselves to a secluded beach or see themselves in a hot tub with every muscle totally relaxed. They have a mental or physical trigger that they use and instantly relax. Once this short period is over, they are able to come back totally refreshed and working at a high performance rate. One example of a person who was able to use this technique to the fullest, was basketball great Michael Jordan. The directors who filmed Michael’s Jordan’s basketball games, frequently put the camera on him, during any break time he actually took from the game. There was a very good reason for this. In comparison to other players who might be talking or drinking water, moving around on the bench-Jordan was quite still. He would be on the bench, with a towel hanging around his neck, leaning forward slightly with a very neutral expression on his face. It is highly likely, that the towel was in fact, a trigger. Once he sat down and placed his towel, he immediately went into total relaxation. It didn’t matter what was going on out on the court. Jordan remained super calm and relaxed. When it was time to come off the bench, he would go back into the game as if he had just started to play. 

Hypnosis and self-hypnosis is used by athletes and power performer in business to assist them in achieving their full potential. Although hypnosis has been around for a long time, it is still shrouded with doubt in regards to the sports and business application. This is due to the carnival atmosphere that is used in stage performances to make the audience laugh. Champion athletes have turned to NLP experts who are skilled in both NLP and hypnosis, to get the best results for their clients. NLP is neuro linguistic programing. It was developed by two men, who called it the language of the brain. NLP teaches you to model the success of others, to change your limiting beliefs, set anchors/triggers for action and change your internal vocabulary. This is really a brief introduction of the full benefits of NLP. Image that you want to be the number one salesperson in your organization or to win tennis championships. Using NLP and hypnosis, you model everything a champion salesman or tennis player does and thinks. You would discover your limiting beliefs about your abilities and replace them with the beliefs you want. Then you would set anchors/triggers by doing something like pressing your thumb and index finger together while remembering a time when you were unstoppable. By repeating this over and over, you set the anchor, so that when you need total self-confidence, you fire the anchor off by pressing those fingers together. Your brain then ignites that self-confidence you need. As mentioned, your vocabulary would be changed by practising the words that empower you and eliminating the words that have a negative influence on you.

Adding in hypnosis to this, you would be guided down into a deep restful space. Once you are there, the professional you are seeing, would ask you to try and open your eyes. Because you are totally relaxed and want to change, you would not be able to open your eyes. You are in no danger and feel very comfortable. From there, the professional will run through a variety of questions, to discover any mental blockages you may have to success. They need to build a profile of how you see yourself, so that they can “suggest,” a totally new way of thinking. They find ways to anchor those new thoughts in your mind and then gently guide you back to being fully awake. In most cases, your professional will make a recording of your visit, so that you can play it over and over and see the whole process in your mind. This helps to make the “new way of thinking,” stick.

You can do self-hypnosis at home and this should also get rid of any fears you might have of doing it with a professional, if you want to really work on things that you feel might require assistance. Self-hypnosis is similar to meditation. To try self-hypnosis, make a list of what you want to accomplish. For sports, you might write down, “I want to hit the tennis ball cleanly and improve my aces by 25%,” for a starting point. For business, perhaps you feel very anxious when you have to speak in front of a large group of people, while presenting new ideas for the company. In this case, you would want to write down, “I feel calm and relaxed when I speak in front of any size group.” That is just a starting point. Write out everything you need to do and feel for either situation.

You will want to wear loose clothing and be in a comfortable room, at a comfortable temperature. Let go of any stress and begin breathing evenly and deeply, letting it out slowly. Start relaxing totally by beginning at the top of your head and think about relaxing each section of your body as you work your way down to your toes. Once you are fully relaxed, picture a set of 10 stairs. Walk down the stair slowly, counting each one out and thinking, “deeper, going deeper in total relaxation.” Once you get to the bottom, you should be in a hypnotic trance. This is the time to start going over the affirmations/statements that you have made for yourself. Once you have repeated your statements for the number of times you have picked, reverse the steps. Go up the steps one at a time, saying “coming awake, coming awake slowly and feeling totally refreshed.”

This is the very basics of NLP, hypnosis and self-hypnosis. These tools are used by champions of every sport and peak performers in industry. The golf great, Jack Nicholas used hypnosis and visualization to become the powerful champion he was. His main benefit was total concentration, being able to block out any noise and see the ball leave his club and go to the destination he wanted.

Many sports teams use NLP to improve their games and their personal lives. The Los Angeles Kings brought in Tony Robbins back in the early nineties to work with their players. There is also a branch of hypnosis called “sports hypnosis,” that was created to help players in all aspects of their performance. There are a wide number of players, former and current that use it. Wayne Gretzky was noted for it and his ability to visualize where the puck will be. He stated that he didn’t follow the puck, he visualized where it would be and would go to that spot and wait for it, then take his shot. Today Sidney Crosby, Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins uses sport hypnosis as does many NBA and UFC players/fighters. 

Subliminal messages have been used successful in many self-help areas.
